Day 112 since Covid-19 'lockdown' was announced. I don’t know where we are in terms of deaths in the UK hairdressers and pubs are open albeit with certain restrictions imposed, visors for hairdressers and temperature checks and details taken when you go to the pub. Track and trace has slipped from the government’s agenda, no-one seems to be talking about it anymore. We move my daughter into her new rented house in Bristol, ready for next year at university whatever form that takes. I’m really pleased she and her friends are going ahead with the shared house. Great to be out of London and see the countryside, it’s very quiet on the roads.

 

This week has been very intense doing the online residency with Sarah link but really good at the same time. The experience of posting every day and making films of what I’m doing (often requiring several takes) pushes my work on in a relentless manner but then that is what I wanted from the experience. The high point was doing the ‘talking heads’ interview on Thursday following Gayle’s advice we recorded it using Zoom. It was great to be asked questions about my practice and to think of questions for Sarah. It was different from the formality of a group crit or tutorial, Lucy put it really well when she described it as responding to the curiosity of peers. I found the experience very helpful as it made me articulate what my practice is about. I can’t help but think this is a valuable resource in the future.

On Wednesday I was in a Group Crit led by Dan Sturgis, the group was chatty, and it was enjoyable and helpful. Dan asked me about ‘Haptic’ to describe the mood or articulate its character to describe where and how I’d like it displayed. Dan talked about a church setting a relationship to reliquaries. The height and type of fixings are clear to me, but the space itself is a little elusive, a medical collection too obvious. Intimate and quiet are definitely qualities I associate with its display, a place where the visitor feels free to move around the piece stare in and take in all its tactile qualities ‘to feel with their eyes’. I haven’t reached a conclusion about this yet.
