There are three aspects to my proposal for Unit 3:
1 Continuing research
-
I intend to maintain the interconnection that developed in Unit 2 between my research and my studio practice. Trauma will remain as the main topic of my research, but the focus of my investigation will be women’s work: specifically women artists whose work is devoted to the body. I have started investigating Eva Hesse and will continue this alongside exploring the work of Berlinde de Bruyckere and other contemporary artists I am yet to identify but whose work is concerned with the corporeal. I would like to include in my inquiry the idea of reparative art as expressed in the ideas of American Queer theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgewick and contemporary writers such as Olivia Laing. In connection with my Covid-19 project I will explore the idea of collective artworks: see Studio Practice.
-
In relation to the type of medical and bodily imagery I am using in my studio practice I will maintain the relationships I have made with the Museum of London and Royal College of Physicians and create new links with other medical collections such as the Wellcome Collection at the Science Museum, as far as this is possible under the Covid lockdown.
2 Studio Practice
-
In Unit 3 I will continue to develop the three dimensional installations I am currently engaged in making. I have just begun to make three dimensional moulded forms that I am incorporating into my work and I aim to use these more in future pieces. I intend to maintain some experimentation into materials, in particular textiles, wax, wire, plaster and possibly liquid latex, but I hope to consolidate these experiments quite quickly so that I can make a substantial body of work using what I have discovered. My ambition is to make a series of connected corporeal works that exploit the translucent properties of wax and textiles in conjunction with lighting.
-
I will bring to fruition the Covid-19 project I initiated in mid-April when I sent out a brief to a wide variety of people and asked them to contribute a small piece of handmade work made during the Coronavirus lockdown. I have received a number of pieces in response already and during Unit 3 I will bring these together into a collective artwork.
3 Exhibiting and disseminating my work
-
The Copeland Gallery Peckham is booked for a group show in November that I am hopeful will go ahead. Cathy Hayes and I have taken on the responsibility for this as Sinde Cheung has had to return to Hong Kong.
-
Besides this traditional exhibition I have begun to think about the possibility of installing my work alongside an existing collection, preferably a smaller collection or in a space that has a degree of intimacy. The most obvious would be a medical collection but the Foundling Museum, Bethlem Museum of the Mind or the Wellcome Collection would also work well. I will investigate this further and will pursue it as a virtual interaction should galleries continue to be closed due to Covid-19.
-
Translucency and light are of developing importance to my work link. In Unit 3 I hope to carry out some experiments in my home studio installing LED lights inside some elements of my work and documenting these, see sketches. I will develop some proposals for how this could be done in an exhibition space and can call on the professional expertise of people I know from my career as an exhibition designer to work up some realistic display proposals should this become important.
